You take a sharp turn off Grays Road and suddenly you feel that grating screech! You’ve kerbed your wheel.

If you continue driving, you might notice your car feels different. There’s a vibrating sensation; the car shakes. So, to be safe, you pull over and examine the wheel that hit the kerb.

The tire rubber seems fine, but you inspect the alloy rim and see a large scrape. If this scrape is the only damage, then a SMART repair technician can swiftly return your wheel to like-new condition. However, if you notice that your rim is cracked or bent, you should take your car to the original dealer or manufacturer for a structural assessment.

Unfortunately, cracked and bent rims happen in the normal course of driving your car. And even though they can look minor, cracked rims are a safety hazard to drivers and vehicle passengers.

The most dangerous risk is that tire surrounding the damaged rim could have a complete blowout, rendering the car un-drivable. A tire blowout at high speeds can lead to partial or total loss of control of your car, and you could crash. Even if this doesn’t happen, a cracked rim compromises the integrity of your vehicle. It can correlate to issues with uneven tire wear, alignment issues, difficulty steering, or damage to suspension and should be addressed right away.

You may even have a cracked rim without even realizing it! Some of the most common causes of cracked rims include:

  • Potholes and uneven roads
  • Bumping or driving on a curb
  • Car accidents

Even if you don’t see an obvious crack, there are other telltale signs of a damaged rim. You may hear different sounds or noises than normal coming from the direction of a wheel, or feel unusual vibrations in the steering wheel, or notice altered vehicle handling and lower gas mileage.

If you have any suspicion of a cracked rim, you should take your car to a main dealer or rim manufactuer immediately.



Whether or not you can repair your cracked rim depends on if the weld will restore enough stability to the car. An experienced technician can repair short, hairline cracks without issue, but the longer and broader the crack grows, the greater the risk that your repair won’t last over time. You should take your car to the original dealer or manufacturer for the best assessment.

However, if your rim is scraped and dented but does not have a crack, then it is a perfect candidate for cost-effective SMART repair.

First, your alloy rim is cleaned and the damaged area is marked off from the rest of the wheel. Then, the rim is sanded to erase the damage and filled and dried with a heater to complete the process. Finally, your technician will paint and polish the wheel until it is like-new.
